In Ephesians, Paul casts a big vision for the church by describing it as the body of Christ, the ongoing, Spirit-empowered presence of Jesus in the world. The danger in describing the church this way is that it can create a sense of grandiosity in Christians who take themselves too seriously. Seeming to anticipate this in Ephesians 2, Paul reminds us, all of us, of the humbling power of God’s grace.
